Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore 37mm Collection

Audemars Piguet used the Royal Oak Offshore’s thirtieth anniversary to expand the smaller 37 mm side of the collection. The 2023 group combined four self-winding chronographs with a black ceramic Music Edition, proving that a reduced diameter did not require a restrained design. Gem-set bezels, vivid dials and interchangeable rubber straps gave the chronographs a jewellery-led character, while the Music Edition used an equaliser-inspired dial and dark ceramic case. The useful comparison is therefore not simply size; it is how the Offshore’s layered architecture changes across materials and functions.

Four colourful chronographs

The chronograph group included steel, pink-gold and yellow-gold cases with bezels set in diamonds or coloured gemstones. Their dials use the compact Lady Tapisserie pattern, applied markers and a three-register layout with the date positioned between four and five. Although the visual emphasis is colour, the underlying geometry remains precise: the octagonal bezel, eight exposed screws, pusher guards and short integrated strap connection must all stay in proportion. On gem-set interpretations, uniform stone height and clean alignment are as important as colour saturation.

The black ceramic Music Edition

The 37 mm Music Edition takes a different route. Its black ceramic case is paired with titanium details and a dial built from coloured vertical bars that recall an audio equaliser. The display is time only, so the face has more open space than the chronographs. A mosaic-pattern rubber strap continues the music theme. Because the case is nearly monochrome, weak edges and inconsistent surface finishing become more visible. The octagonal bezel should remain sharply defined even when the material absorbs much of the light.

Movement layouts must match

The chronographs and the Music Edition do not share one interchangeable display. Chronograph references require working registers with the correct scale and hand behaviour, while the time-only edition needs a movement and dial without decorative, non-functional counters. Compare the case-back view, rotor position and balance location with the exact reference. A visually busy dial can hide functional shortcuts, so operate the crown and pushers and observe what each hand actually does.

How 37 mm wears

Diameter does not tell the complete story because the Offshore has a broad bezel, projecting crown protection and a thick multi-part case. A 37 mm reference can still feel substantial, especially when bright gemstones extend the visual boundary. The integrated rubber strap drops quickly from the case, which can help on a smaller wrist. Check the gap at each strap end, the quick-change release and the folding clasp or pin buckle specified for the edition. Those practical parts should work cleanly rather than merely resemble the original.

What to compare first

Begin with the reference number, case material and dial type. Then compare bezel setting, screw position, dial pattern, register spacing and strap combination in that order. Do not use a photograph of the steel diamond model to judge a yellow-gold sapphire version. Audemars Piguet made each configuration intentionally distinct, and mixing their details is a more revealing error than a minor colour shift caused by lighting.

Christine

Christine writes for BuyWatches about watches that attract attention for their design, history and distinctive details. Her interests range from familiar Rolex references such as the Submariner, Datejust, Daytona and Oyster Perpetual to popular collections from Omega, Breitling, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet and other well-known names.

Rather than relying on broad claims about quality, Christine prefers to look closely at the details that separate one watch from another. Her articles often cover case proportions, dial layouts, bezels, bracelets, reference changes and the visual differences between generations.

When discussing replica watches, she aims to clearly separate the specifications of the genuine reference from the characteristics that may vary between replica versions. This gives readers a more useful point of comparison without suggesting that every watch shares the same materials, movement or construction.

Christine writes with UK readers in mind and keeps her articles straightforward and easy to follow, whether she is looking at a newly released dial, revisiting an older reference or comparing details across a familiar watch collection.
